Martha Wayne was a homemaker, philanthropist, the wife of Thomas Wayne, and the mother of Bruce Wayne before Bruce was murdered by Joe Chill.

Martha was compassionate and charitable socialite, dedicated to her family and using her wealth to support various causes. She was a loving mother to Bruce and was a devoted wife to Thomas. While enjoying a privileged life, she also once possessed a strong social conscience and a desire to help others. But everything changed when Bruce was killed.

In the Flashpoint timeline, Joe Chill murders Bruce Wayne, rather than the boy's parents. Martha Wayne was so traumatized by the event and the loss of her son that she wasn't responding properly to therapy even after several months. Driven to madness by grief and unable to cope with the loss, she adopts the persona of the Joker fueled by a nihilistic rage and a desire to inflict pain as a means of coping with her trauma. Martha blames Thomas and her butler Alfred Pennyworth for failing to protect their son but she still loves him deep down.

Alfred Pennyworth served in the British Armed Forces, possibly the Special Air Service (SAS) before becoming the Wayne family butler.

Alfred was a secondary father to young Bruce prior to his tragic murder.

Initially great friends with Martha, Alfred’s relationship with her had become toxic and abusive after as she blames Alfred for “not doing his job”, though Martha verbally abuses Thomas, she physically, psychologically, emotionally and verbally abuses Alfred. Martha comes closer to killing Alfred each time.

Alfred’s relationship with Thomas is still strong as they both have shared trauma and both feel responsible for Bruce’s demise and Martha’s insanity taking it upon each other to console one another. Martha flat out says they’re just gay for each other and probably hired Joe Chill to kill her son so they could be together.

Alfred is cleaning the manor while Martha watches him in a bright green undershirt wearing purple pants and a purple vest, clown makeup all over and her hair dyed dark green. Martha thinks her life is a joke and her husband says she should smile so she painted on a smile to make him happy, she still loves Thomas, but she can’t get over her hatred. Martha makes a lot of dark jokes. Martha also made it a point that since Gotham killed her son she won’t be funding them or their wellbeing with her money anymore. Martha believes everyone in Gotham deserves to suffer and rot.

Alfred turned to look at Martha and she was creepily smiling with psycho eyes.

Martha snapped Say his name again I’ll cut your throat and use your blood as lipstick! I mean you failed my boy so you shouldn’t get to say his name!
