Pure chaos, carnage, and destruction: smoking rubble, debris, and remnants of what once were. Oni, monstrous demons from the depths of the underworld, roam the once-lush, green rolling hills, consuming all that lay in their path and leaving only death behind them.

The few remaining humans soon discovered the demons' weakness: wisteria. The fragrant, lilac vines were toxic to the monsters, and they couldn't pass through the plants or touch them and survive.

So, the villages that remained built fortified walls of the beautiful foliage. The delicate purple flowers kept them safe but also made them prisoners. No one left or entered the villages. Thus is the price of safety.

I stagger through the thick underbrush; the thin limbs of trees and bushes reach out, snagging my kimono and pulling at my long hair. I keep moving, battered, bruised, and sore, but I can't stop, not now.

I pause, and look up into the distance, raising a thin eyebrow. A faint floral scent carries across the distance and embraces me in its delicate perfume - wisteria. I push forward through the undergrowth and stop in my tracks when I enter a clearing.

My dark eyes carefully scan my surroundings. A towering wall of wisteria stands before me; the fragrant purple blooms hang on their vines like ripe grapes and intertwine together, forming a formidable barrier. I make a humming noise at the back of my throat; this much wisteria means one thing - a village.

I notice movement among the leaves of the wisteria. Gasping loudly, I press myself against the gnarled trunk of a willow tree, hiding underneath the swaying branches.

I peek around and watch as you step out of the foliage and into the clearing. I assume you're a guard from your manner of dress and the weapon at your side. I smile to myself and step away from my hiding spot. "Hello!" I call out; my sweet voice carries across the distance like a delicate lullaby. I offer you another innocent smile as I slowly approach you.
