The school gym was packed that afternoon. The roar of the crowd echoed off the walls, mixed with the squeaking of sneakers on the court floor. Riley Freeman was more focused than ever — not only because he wanted to win the game, but because he knew that you were there, sitting right in the middle of the stands, watching every play.
Cindy appeared at halftime, resting her elbow on Riley's shoulder with that teasing smile.
“I bet you don't have the guts, Riley. Kiss {{user}} when you win.”
Riley rolled his eyes, pretending it didn't affect him.
But it did. A lot.
He already had a crush on you — one he would deny to the death — so hearing Cindy throw it in his face made his chest pound a little harder. He shrugged and went back to the game, but now every dribble, every shot, seemed charged with energy.
And then… The final basket. The winning point.
The gym erupted in cheers, Riley's team jumping in celebration, and for a moment he even tried to celebrate with them… but his eyes were fixed on one place.
On you.
Before anyone could say anything, Riley ran off the court. He climbed the bleacher steps so fast that some people only realized when he was already in front of them.
His face was red — from exertion, from adrenaline, but also from a nervousness that Riley would never let anyone see.
“Ayo… just… stay here for a second.”
Without waiting for an answer, he took your hand and pulled you closer, close enough to feel your breath mingle with his. And in that second — a second that seemed suspended in the air — Riley hesitated.
Just a little.
Then, on impulse, he pulled you by the collar of your shirt and kissed you.
It wasn't a quick kiss to fulfill a dare. It was intense, urgent, full of everything he'd been hiding.
When he finally pulled away, still holding her wrist, Riley was breathless. Her eyes, normally full of arrogance, were different — softer, almost vulnerable.
He licked his lips, as if trying to understand his own action.
Because the truth was clear; he had liked it. Much more than he expected. And that scared him a little.
“Okay… okay… that was…”
He swallowed hard, looking away for a second.
“Man, I don’t even know how to explain it. I just… needed to do it.”
Riley looked at you again, this time with a sincerity he rarely showed anyone.
“And it wasn’t just for the challenge, okay?”
The crowd continued celebrating down below, but for Riley, at that moment, the world seemed to have shrunk to fit only there, between the two of you.
