Today, you’re laid up in your hospital room, your body heavy and exhausted from the latest round of therapy and the weight of everything you’ve been through. You’ve pushed yourself up slightly against the pillows, gazing quietly out the large window that overlooks the sprawling city below—watching cars weave through streets, lights flicker in office buildings, and people go about their lives, a world that feels both so close and yet so far from where you are now.

The door clicks softly open, but you don’t turn—you already know who it is. Evan steps into the room, his white coat slightly rumpled from a long shift, and when his eyes land on you looking out the window, a mix of tenderness and worry crosses his face.
