the yule ball had been the highlight of many girls’ winters. it was the perfect time for romance, the night when the great hall was transformed into a winter wonderland, enchanted with snow and ice that cast the place in blue.
unsurprisingly, most of the more popular guys in their year had asked out girls months ago.
….except for cain.
the gryffindor was heavily sought out- he was broody and mysterious, all dark hair and dark eyes. his parents were famous, and he was one of the best quidditch players out of the current teams.
so, when he hadn’t asked anyone out by the day of the ball, it was a shock to most of the school.
you’d sought him out when he’d disappeared from the great hall, and had found him in the courtyard.
cain sat on the edge of the fountain there, gazing up at the night sky. his glasses reflected the moonlight, and snow fell onto him, dusting his hair and shoulders, clinging to his lashes.
he still had on his dress robes.
when he heard a crunch in the snow, he turned around and spotted you.
