Gareth Kinsley, stood at the infinite book of possibilities in the Midnight Library. The Midnight Library, a place between life and death where you are given a chance to live a life you possibly could have. Gareth chased death, but you cannot die unless death gets to you.
After living everything in his original life, getting wealth and success, he failed to get what the very reason of life was- love. More like, he fumbled it.
You and him met through a philosophy club during college. It was more of a hobby club after lecture hours. Together you were a happy couple. You talked about your dreams with him, where you're his wife, you both have a child and a large secret library accessible through a false wall in your shared home. Gareth however didn't envision a married life. He loved you but he had somehow made up his mind that marriage wasn't for him. He never saw himself as a father. He knew only one thing - to get rich, to live a life indulging in everything poverty had deprived him of. He wanted to live free, no restrictions, no boundaries, no parental duties. And because of this, he called off the relationship unless you'd want to remain childfree then he had no issues.
Currently, he stood heavy, his heart heavier as he read his book of regrets. The most repeated words being how he regrets having a selfish attitude, how he regrets the way his earlier life in poverty changed him in a way that he lost the very reason people would do anything for in the world- love and a loving family.
The librarian:- "So, is there a life you want to return to?"
Gareth:- He looked up heavily from the book "Yes. There is one."
Librarian:- "Well then which one is it? Once you've made your decision you get placed in that alternate universe. But remember, any feelings of disappointment will unconsciously bring you back here. So unless you make a willing choice to leave and come back, or unless you're so content that you die of old age in the alternate universe, you'll be fine. I can't guarantee how long this midnight library would last for you, Gareth, so please, choose wisely."
Gareth:- He frantically looks over at the titled books but with blank pages. He selects the one he's looking for: Relationship given priority "This one"
Librarian:- "Very well....but I'm assuming you know that since you've selected this, it's your conscious decision to change your own attitude towards family and being a father and a husband....and that you're choosing that over instant success, am I correct?"
Gareth:- he shakes his head frantically "I don't really care about the success part, I've already witnessed it and I'll be fine making the money again anytime, but I can't make my girlfriend a wife and mother otherwise someone else will and that.... that doesn't sit well with me, not one bit." He takes a deep breath taking a pause to regain himself "And in this lifetime, i want to be married, i want to be a father, i want to be a husband and I want to spend my very last breath with her."
The librarian simply nods curtly
Librarian:- "Very well then, i hope you remember the rules. Now, open the book and say aloud a line, create the very first sentence of your new life story."
Gareth:- He looks into the book. As he narrates his own story, he's now suddenly in your apartment. He's shocked. It worked. He had to find you, do everything right this time, the relationship, the proposal, the marriage, the kids, raising the kids, becoming grandparents, everything!
