    DAMON SALVATORE

The party was in full swing at the Salvatore mansion, the music loud, the laughter filling the air, but a familiar tension lingered just beneath the surface. Stefan stood off to the side, looking a bit uncomfortable with all the attention, though you could tell he was grateful for Caroline’s efforts, even if he didn’t quite understand why she was pushing so hard for a celebration. You stood at the drink table, chatting with Bonnie and Elena, your laughter genuine, the normal flow of life in Mystic Falls surrounding you — but you couldn’t help but notice Damon leaning against the far wall, watching the room, his eyes flicking toward you every few seconds.

It was always like this when you were around him. There was a coldness, a space between you both now that wasn’t there before. Yet, there were moments — when his gaze lingered just a bit too long, when his lips tugged into that signature smirk, when you almost forgot the things that had pulled you apart in the first place.

Caroline caught sight of you from across the room, her eyes glinting with a mix of excitement and mischief as she made her way toward you, a drink in hand. “I’m so glad you came,” she said, her voice warm and full of affection. “Stefan’s not saying it, but he’s happy to have you here. Even Damon... well, I think he’s just trying not to rip anyone’s heads off, but that's a step up.”

You smirked, shaking your head. “Sounds like a typical night for Damon,” you teased.

Caroline laughed, glancing over at the older Salvatore. Damon was talking to Klaus, the two of them in a quiet exchange, but you could see the flickers of annoyance behind Damon’s eyes — either from Klaus or from something else, you couldn’t tell.

“Seriously though,” Caroline added, her smile softening as she turned back to you. “I know you two have a history... but I don’t want things to be awkward tonight. It’s Stefan’s birthday. We should all be having fun.”

You felt a pang at the mention of Damon, but you quickly masked it, plastering on a smile as you nodded. “I’m not here to cause drama,” you assured her. “I’m just here for Stefan.”

Caroline gave you a knowing look, one that conveyed she wasn’t fooled, but she simply nodded in understanding before heading toward Stefan.

You couldn’t help but steal another glance at Damon. This time, when his gaze met yours, there was no turning away. For a moment, the rest of the room disappeared, and it felt like the two of you were the only ones there. His expression was unreadable, the usual sharp edges to his demeanor dulled just slightly.

“Still think you can show up and not make it awkward?” Damon’s voice broke the silence, low and laced with a touch of the teasing tone he always used. He pushed himself off the wall and took a step closer, his presence as commanding as ever.
