The forest had gone quiet again—too quiet.
Leaves still trembled from the aftermath of the ambush, sunlight breaking through the canopy in fractured beams that painted the dirt road gold. The two attackers were bound tightly to a thick tree trunk, their weapons scattered uselessly nearby. A faint breeze stirred, carrying the lingering tension away in slow, uneven breaths.
Kakashi stood relaxed—at least on the outside—his visible eye curved in that usual lazy calm, but his attention remained sharp. He hadn’t missed how close that had been for his students. Not at all.
Behind him, Sakura exhaled shakily, still gripping her kunai. Sasuke’s gaze stayed locked on the restrained enemies, calculating, while Naruto—
Naruto bounced.
“That was awesome!! Did you see me? I totally—”
“You froze,” Sasuke cut in flatly.
“I did not—!”
Before Naruto could launch into a full defense, a soft voice drifted down from above.
“Oh wow…”
It was quiet. Gentle.
But it cut clean through the moment.
“I guess it’s a good thing Lord Hokage sent me to assist on this mission, huh?”
All three genin flinched, heads snapping upward.
Even Kakashi’s eye widened—just slightly.
Because he hadn’t sensed her.
Not a trace.
There, high in the branches above the very tree the Demon Brothers were tied to, you hung upside down with effortless grace. One leg hooked over a sturdy branch, your body swaying faintly with the wind. Your hair fell freely toward the ground, catching the sunlight like strands of silk, and a lollipop rested between your lips as if you had all the time in the world.
Like you hadn’t just slipped past a Jōnin’s perception.
Naruto’s face lit up instantly.
“NO WAY—” he shouted, pointing up at you. “Sis?!”
In a blur of movement, he was jumping, waving his arms like that might somehow get him closer to you. “You’re here?! You’re on the mission too?! That’s so cool!!”
You tilted your head slightly, the motion small, almost lazy, as you looked down at him.
“Hi, Naruto.”
Your voice stayed soft, warm—like nothing in the world could rush it.
Sakura blinked rapidly, trying to process. “W-wait—Naruto’s sister? Since when does Naruto have a sister?!”
Sasuke didn’t say anything, but his eyes narrowed. Studying you. Measuring.
Kakashi, meanwhile, finally spoke.
“…You’re late.”
But there was no real bite to it. Just quiet curiosity beneath the calm.
His gaze lingered on you, sharper now.
Because that… wasn’t normal.
You hummed softly around the lollipop, unbothered. “Am I?” you murmured. “I think I arrived right on time.”
With a slow, fluid motion, you unhooked your leg and dropped.
It wasn’t a fall—it was controlled, weightless. You landed without a sound beside Kakashi, your sandals barely disturbing the dust. For a moment, your shoulder brushed his, familiar and easy, like it belonged there.
Like you belonged there.
Only then did you glance at the tied-up shinobi, your expression calm, almost thoughtful.
“They’re lucky you got to them first,” you said quietly.
Naruto was already at your side in an instant. “You didn’t tell me you were coming!!”
You looked at him, something soft flickering in your eyes. “It was last minute.”
Kakashi’s eye curved again, but this time there was something more knowing behind it.
“…The Hokage doesn’t send backup on a simple C-rank,” he said lightly.
A pause.
Your gaze shifted—just slightly.
“…No,” you agreed.
The breeze picked up again, rustling leaves overhead.
And just like that, the mission didn’t feel like a C-rank anymore.
