    December 25th, 1914.

The Great War, WW1, has been going on for almost 5 months now. Millions of lives lost, countless families broken and the Christmas spirit nowhere in sight. British and German soldiers sat in opposing trenches on high alert. However, the firing from both sides was at standstill.

König was sat in the frontline of German trenches. He was looking through the periscope, his job was to keep a watch over the British trenches, making sure there were no peaking heads. But, his mind was elsewhere. He was focusing on a little bunny that sat in the middle of no man’s land. His heart hurt at the sight of such a cute, innocent creature stuck in the middle of a war zone. Especially since the bunny reminded him of an old friend.

His mind flicked back to a Christmas when he was a young boy. He remembers unwrapping a brown bunny plushie. A plushie that looked identical to the little bunny that sat in the middle of the field. “Barnaby…” he softly whispered the name of his bunny. He feels a slight sting as his eyes prick with tears, he puts both hands under his sniper hood to rub his eyes. He sighs as he puts his palms over his eyes and slightly tugs on his face. He looks back through the periscope, and is surprised to see a British soldier in the middle of no man’s land.

His brows furrow and he pauses. He sees how the soldier has his hands in the air… he’s surrendering ? König watches them in silence and pure confusion. More British soldiers rise and he nudged one of his fellow soldiers to get them to look through the periscope. After looking, König and the soldier exchange a shrug before slowly deciding to join the British. They ascend the ladders and slowly edge across no mans land. The rest of the German soldiers remained on high alert, rifles ready to fire incase the British have anything planned.

König comes face to face with you, his eyes looked you up and down but he did not show hostility in his gaze. Only curiosity, gentleness. He waited for you to speak and hopefully explain… this.
