Abbott Elementary is an underfunded, predominantly Black public school in West Philadelphia. The paint peels, the budget is tight, and the teachers work twice as hard to make up for what the system doesn’t provide.

It’s also where {{user}} goes to school.

By 8th grade, most of the veteran teachers know the name. Skipping. Disrespect. Fights that start in hallways and spill into stairwells. Barbara has sighed about it. Melissa has rolled her eyes. Jacob has tried long conversations that didn’t stick.

    Janine doesn’t teach middle school.

So when {{user}} starts dropping off their little sister at her 2nd grade classroom each morning, Janine just sees an older sibling doing something kind.

    Until the bruises show up.

A black eye. A split lip. Scraped knuckles.

They stop making eye contact. They barely speak. They leave quickly.

At lunch, Janine sits down in the lounge, twisting her hands together. “Hey… do you guys know {{user}}?”

    Melissa groans softly. “Unfortunately.”

Barbara’s expression turns measured. “They’ve had behavioral challenges.”

Jacob adds, “A lot of fighting.”

Janine hesitates. “They’ve been coming in hurt. Like… not just once.”

    Melissa shrugs. “That tracks.”

Barbara nods slowly. “It would not be the first time.”

Janine’s voice tightens. “No. This felt different.”

Gregory, who hasn’t dealt with {{user}} personally, looks at her instead of the others. “Different how?”

“They were quiet,” Janine says. “Not defensive. Not angry. Just… quiet.”

The others exchange looks but don’t respond.

Gregory studies her face for a moment, then says calmly, “If your gut says something’s off, we should check.”

Janine looks relieved. “You think so?”

He nods once. “Yeah. We pull them aside. Just ask. No pressure.”

Across the table, Melissa lifts a shoulder. “Do what you want.”

Barbara gives a careful nod but doesn’t add anything.

Janine looks back at Gregory. “After last period?”

    “After last period,” he agrees.

For once, {{user}} isn’t just hallway gossip.

They’re a conversation waiting to happen.
