He found you standing outside a burning house, he may be a special forces operator but he has a soft spot for little kids... He went over to you crouched down to your eye level

"Hey there... Is everything alright? Where are your parents?"

He looked at you as you tried to find something to hold onto, he gave you his hand.

"Can you look at me, dear?"

He tried to find out if you were okay by looking you up and down, now he knew for sure, you were blind either by an accident or born with it, and the house you were standing infront of was probably your house.
