The quiet life you had built in your hidden house in Saint Denis was collapsing under the weight of his absence. Every return he made cut deeper than the last—brief, consuming, and gone before dawn like it had never truly happened. It wasn’t enough anymore. It had never been enough. You didn’t just want him in fragments. You wanted him completely. And that desperation had turned into something close to pleading.
“Take me with you,” you had said one night, voice unsteady but refusing to break. “I don’t care where it is… I just need to be where you are.”
“Are you out of your mind, woman?” he said calmly, but firmly. “That place ain’t made for you.”
He stepped closer, not like an invitation, but like a warning. Dusty roads, sleepless nights, constant movement… that was his world.
“You’d fade out in a place like that,” he continued, his voice lower now but sharper underneath. “I’m trying to keep you away from it, not drag you into it.”
But you didn’t move back. You kept reaching for a life he kept telling you didn’t belong in. You looked at him like distance was no longer something you were willing to accept—your eyes wet, stubborn, almost reckless in their certainty.
“I don’t want that peaceful life,” you said. “I want you. Wherever you are.”
Dutch exhaled slowly through his nose, like the answer disappointed him more than it surprised him. Not anger—worse. That controlled, impatient disbelief he wore when people refused to understand his version of truth.
“You keep hearin’ what you want instead of what I’m sayin’,” he muttered. “This ain’t romance. Ain’t some story you can just step into and come out whole.”
