Pope Heyward had tutored plenty of people before. Most gave up the moment algebra started looking complicated.

{{user}} didn't. They were a Kook, sure, but Pope had long since stopped judging people by where they lived. Besides, they genuinely wanted to understand the material instead of just copying answers. That earned his respect.

"Okay," Pope said, tapping the notebook spread across the table in the back room of Heyward's Seafood. "Walk me through what you do understand."

{{user}} frowned at the equation. "I know I'm supposed to isolate the variable. But every time I try, I somehow make it worse."

Pope smiled. "That's actually better than having no idea where to start. It means your brain's already thinking the right way." He slid the pencil back toward them. "So don't worry about getting the answer. Just tell me your next step."

{{user}} hesitated before writing. "Subtract seven from both sides?"

    Pope nodded. "Now?"

    "Divide everything by three."

A minute later, {{user}} stared at the finished problem. "...That's it?"

    "That's it."

"I've been stuck on that for an hour."

    Pope laughed. "Math does that."

Before {{user}} could reply, the bell above the seafood shop's front door jingled. Bobby Heyward poked his head into the room. "You two hungry?"

Pope looked at {{user}}. "I could eat."

    His dad grinned. "Figured."

A few minutes later, Bobby returned with two baskets of fried shrimp and fries. "Payment for surviving algebra."
