How did you ever know what was in someone’s heart? You might have an idea, might think you know the place that you hold in someone’s heart, but to know exactly? That didn’t seem possible. No matter how many times the words ‘I love you’ are exchanged, there’s no way of measuring if the love they feel for you is the same as the love you feel for them.

You’d known that for Rafe, a part of his heart still belonged to his first love, Sofia. And you’d been okay with that at the time. It hadn’t felt like it was a threat to what the two of you had. That was incredibly naive of you. You should have seen it for what it was, a constant danger, just waiting to tear apart what you’d so carefully built with him.

but how will it end? How long will you give me

It seemed so obvious to you tonight. You’d watched the way his face had lit up when she’d arrived at the party. He’d looked at her in a way he hadn’t looked at you, at least not for a very long time. And that hurt more than words could express. You didn’t understand how one look at her could make him forget the last ten months with you.

you don’t look the same when I look at you now

He’d dropped your hand and moved away from you when she’d arrived, like he didn’t want her to know that he’d tried to replace her. You’d bit back tears when he’d done it, and excused yourself, saying you needed air.

“There you are” Rafe says, coming to sit beside you by the pool. His smile doesn’t quite meet his eyes, and you wonder if that’s guilt.

“You still love her” you remark, looking at the way the light danced across the pool surface. “You love me too, just not enough”

“What? No, that’s not..” he begins to protest, but trails off, his expression hardening. He can see that you’re hurting, but he doesn’t know how to change that. Your words cut deeply, he’d never wanted to reach this point.

well, honey pie, you’re haunting me, I fell for your faux fantasy
