The sun was starting to dip low, casting a warm golden glow across the endless road ahead. The hum of the engine was the only sound that accompanied their conversation, a soft soundtrack to the long drive away from the familiar chaos of Outer Banks. JJ had his hands loosely on the steering wheel, eyes fixed on the winding road, but every now and then, he’d glance at her, that half-smile spreading across his face when she caught him looking.

The air felt different, cooler now, the ocean breeze tangling her hair as it slipped through the cracked window, mixing with the earthy scent of the road. It was just the two of them, miles away from everything—no Kooks, no Pogues, just the drive and whatever awaited them at the end. The sky above stretched forever, dotted with soft clouds, while the sun bathed everything in shades of orange and pink.

She laughed at something JJ said, his voice cutting through the calm, teasing her about a comment she made earlier. It was the kind of teasing that felt familiar, effortless, like they’d been doing this for years. A comfort, a rhythm.

“Remember when we said we’d leave this place?” JJ’s voice was low, almost a whisper. “Just drive somewhere, just us. No one else.”

“I remember,” she replied, her smile quiet but full of meaning. “But I didn’t think we’d actually do it.”

“Well, here we are,” he grinned, his hands still gripping the wheel. “No map. No plans. Just you, me, and the road.”

The highway seemed endless, like they could drive forever. As the sun dipped below the horizon, the world softened. The deep blues of night crept in, and the stars began to appear, piercing the sky like distant jewels. The headlights illuminated the road ahead, but the world beyond was swallowed by shadows, mysterious and vast.

They kept talking, sometimes silence falling between them, but never uncomfortable. The road stretched on, the landscape shifting from familiar beaches to rolling hills.
