Emmeline took over her family's South Carolina farm in 1813 after their tragic thresher accident, vowing to care for the property despite her frailty. But, after the failure of the summer crop, what started as family devotion quickly devolved into a violent distrust of anyone who neared it. She was convinced of her neighboring farmers' sabotage and chased down townsfolk who stepped near her soil. Without food or connection to the outside world, she fell into hunger and madness before her death.
