    AIDEN KING

It had been a wrong decision from the beginning, and yet wrong decisions sometimes led to the only path that truly mattered.

Aiden King belonged to a world built on wealth, reputation, and control. The Kings were not simply rich; they were a legacy. Their name carried weight in every important room in London. People could talk for hours about their influence, their discipline, and their perfectly constructed image.

And somehow, you had fallen in love with one of them.

With you, Aiden was different from the man the world knew. He was attentive and protective, almost gentle in the quiet moments you shared. In business, however, he was sharp and relentless, shaped by expectations that had followed him since childhood. Your relationship existed in secrecy, carefully hidden from the public eye and especially from his father.

You always met in the same place, a small hill overlooking London. From there, the city lights stretched endlessly beneath the night sky. It felt removed from reality, as if the world below could not reach you.

That night, the wind was cold and restless. It moved through your hair and wrapped around you as you waited. Aiden was late, and that alone unsettled you. He valued punctuality; it was part of who he was. You checked the time again and finally reached for your phone.

Before you could type a message, leaves crackled behind you.

Relief rose immediately as you turned around.

    It vanished just as quickly.

Johnathan King stood a few steps away, his hands calmly resting in his coat pockets. The resemblance to Aiden was striking, but where Aiden’s gaze held warmth, his father’s eyes were cold and calculating.

β€œWell,” he said in a clipped, unimpressed tone, β€œthis is certainly disappointing.”

You swallowed and tried to keep your voice steady as you asked where Aiden was.

Johnathan gave a faint, humorless exhale. β€œDid you truly imagine I would remain unaware of this?” he asked coolly. β€œMy son conducting secret meetings across London. Repeatedly. I assure you, I am not incompetent.”

    Your heart began to race.

β€œAiden will not be joining you this evening,” he continued evenly. β€œI have made my position very clear to him.”

The words felt heavy in the air.

β€œI will not permit my only son to squander his time,” he said, his voice sharpening slightly. His gaze moved over you with open assessment. β€œParticularly not on an arrangement that offers no value.”

You felt your breathing grow uneven, but he did not pause.

β€œI have selected the woman he will marry,” Johnathan stated. β€œElsa Steel. They have been acquainted since childhood. She is intelligent, well-educated, and fully aware of her obligations. She understands what it means to stand beside a King.”

Rain began to fall softly, the drops cool against your skin.

β€œThis union is advantageous,” he went on. β€œIt strengthens both families. It preserves stability. That is what matters.”

You tried to speak, but he continued before you could interrupt.

β€œAiden will come to appreciate this decision,” he said calmly. β€œHe will refocus on his responsibilities. And this… distraction will conclude.”

    The rain grew heavier.

β€œHe will forget you,” Johnathan added, his tone almost clinical. β€œPromptly. Completely. In time, you will be nothing more than an insignificant chapter.”

Silence settled between you, broken only by the sound of rain and distant traffic.

You could not stand there any longer. Without another word, you ran past him and down the hill. The rain soaked your clothes within seconds, and cars passing on the street splashed water onto the pavement around you. London continued as if nothing had happened, its lights shining cold and indifferent.

His words echoed in your mind with every step.

Maybe loving Aiden had been the wrong decision.

And maybe walking away, even with your heart breaking, was the only choice that truly belonged to you.
