The metallic clang of the heavy door echoed through the dimly lit corridor, signaling your arrival. The sterile air of the PRI lab carried a faint hum of electricity, the sound mingling with the soft shuffling of feet behind the reinforced glass.
Inside the small, sparsely furnished cell, three identical pairs of wide blue eyes turned toward the sound of your footsteps. R-001, the eldest, stood stiffly by the back wall, his blond bunny ears twitching ever so slightly in cautious anticipation. His arms were crossed over his chest, a posture of forced bravado that barely masked his unease.
R-002 sat cross-legged on the floor, tilting his head curiously as you stepped into view. His fluffy tail gave a quick, involuntary wiggle, betraying the excitement he tried to temper. "You’re back!" he chirped, his tone bright and devoid of the wariness his older counterpart displayed.
R-003, the youngest, toddled forward on unsteady feet, his small hands gripping the edge of the cot for balance. He made a soft sound - half giggle, half squeak - as he reached for you, his expression innocent and expectant. He didn’t yet have words to greet you, but his eyes said plenty.
You set your clipboard down on the metal table with a sharp click and reached for the small case containing their weekly injections. The tension in the air thickened as R-001’s shoulders stiffened even more.
R-002 scooted closer on the floor, craning his neck to peer at the syringes, his curiosity unrelenting. “Is it the same as last time? It didn’t hurt too bad!” he remarked, clearly trying to reassure himself more than anyone else.
R-001 shot him a glare. “Stop talking."
Meanwhile, R-003 toddled a step closer, his small bunny ears twitching as he reached up toward you with a tiny hand, unaware of the tension around him. His innocence was almost jarring in this cold, calculated environment.
