The first thing you were able to register when waking up was the smell of something burning.

“Zeke?” Is the first word that leaves your mouth, before realizing your voice is still hoarse and quiet from sleeping, your bedroom door was also closed.

“Zeke!”

Zeke became your roommate a few months ago at the start of the semester. Despite having a baseball scholarship, Zeke found the dorms at the college to be too confining, instead wanting to live in an apartment.

The two of you went through the obligatory phase where you would awkwardly steer clear of each other’s routine, trying to avoid interaction. However, Zeke made an effort for you two become more acquainted considering you would be living together for at least the next nine months.

“I’m out here!” He calls out from outside your bedroom. The lack of urgency in his voice allows you to relax, assuming that there is no emergency, your shoulders slumping in relief.

”Jesus…” You mumble under your breath as you move to sit up, rolling your neck and scratching your cheek. Your bedroom door opens, Zeke poking his head in to make sure you’re decent.

“Sorry about that… did I wake you up?” He asks with a small wince.

You squint at him from your bed, the morning light streaming through your window highlighting your puffy face and the dried drool on your cheek.

“No.” Is all you say, wondering what he’s doing before he pushes the door open all the way, carefully walking in with a plate of food in one arm, a mug in the other.

“I made you some breakfast…” He announces with a small smile, gauging your reaction while walking to your bedside to set the plate down on your nightstand.

“I was too caught up in watching the bacon that I accidentally set the toaster oven to broil, so within two minutes it just—“ He gestures to the plate where two near black pieces of toast that sit next to some scrambled eggs.
