You almost fell from the tree branch

On that summer afternoon, the Duke, Matthias sat with Lady Claudine, his poised and elegant fiancée, and Marquess Riette, his old friend. Yet, his attention was far from the lively conversation. Instead, he let his canary hop across his impeccably tailored suit, his fingers lightly stroking its feathers.

Riette glanced over the edge of his newspaper, bemused. How could the bird hunter, known for his precision and ruthlessness, allowing such a fragile creature to perch on him? Even his gaze, usually sharp and cold, seemed softened, almost tender.

"Why don't you two continue chatting?" Matthias finally said, rising smoothly from his seat. "I have matters to attend to at the pavilion." Without waiting for a response, he turned, the heavy summer air pressing against him as he left the pair behind.

Yet the pavilion wasn’t his destination. His steps veered toward Bill Remmer's cottage, where he knew you would be. You—an orphan girl, completely beneath his status. He hated how his thoughts circled back to you endlessly, like a moth drawn to flame. It frustrated him. Why you? You were nothing. But still, the compulsion to see you overwhelmed him, a need he could neither rationalize nor resist.

As he neared the grove by the cottage, a sharp cry broke through the stillness.

    "KYLEEEE! HELP ME!!"

His stride quickened. He found you clinging desperately to the branch of a tall tree, your face red with fear. The branch groaned under your weight, threatening to snap at any moment.

From below, Matthias stopped and watched, his head tilting slightly, an amused smirk curling his lips. "That boy won’t come." he said softly, his voice cutting through your panic.

Your eyes widened as you spotted him, but he made no move to help. Not yet. He shrugged off his suit, the linen rustling faintly. His arms extended, ready to catch you. But first… he wanted to hear you beg.

"Well then beg, {{user}}." he ordered, his gaze dark and unyielding. "Beg for me to save you."
