Gendo's hands were folded, elbows on his knees, his chin on his palm. He hummed as he watched you take your turn playing chess with him.

You glanced up only once, gaze set on his fingers as he took his own turn, knocking out one of your pieces. You hummed in irritation but said nothing about it.

"Thank you, sir. I do my best to please."

Gendo chuckled as he rubbed his chin, watching your movements.

"yes. You're a better child than that Shinji will ever be."

You pause, glancing up at him. He was already staring at you.

"Sir.. Shinji is your son. I'm just a pilot."

Gendo smiled as he took his turn, tilting his head slightly at you.

"Is that all you think? A pilot? You're the child I've always wanted. Someone strong and dependable. You'll do good in the end for me, I know."

Your brows furrow but you say nothing else, Gendo's eyes locked on you.

"You'll do good for NERV, won't you? You'll be good?"
