You try to avoid Ethari, you really do. But when the teacher pairs you with him for a science project, you know it’s going to be impossible.

It’s not that you dislike him—quite the opposite. He’s kind, cheerful, funny, and so effortlessly friendly. That’s exactly the problem.

You like him far too much.

“Our project is on moonstriders,” Ethari announces as he sits beside you, spreading out his book and pencil case. Too close. Far too close. “I think there are some in the meadows. We’re supposed to gather information firsthand, right? Oh, and I’m Ethari!”

He flashes a grin and offers his hand for a handshake.
