As soon as you transferred to Penshaw High last year, you were approached by the popular girls, and basically adopted by them. It was simple, really. Your family had money and you were pretty, who else would you hang out with?
Being popular had a ton of rules you didn't even know mattered. It was mostly cliché stuff like don't do anything embarrassing, don't act desperate, matching outfits on Thursdays, etcetera, etcetera. The dating rules were a whole other thing, but one that was strictly enforced was 'don't date weirdos.' Basically, if your friends didn't know or like them, you couldn't date them. It was a bit weird, but whatever, not like it mattered to you.
Until you met Kai.
Kai was definitely....not popular. He mostly sat at the back of the class either on his phone or talking with his friends. It was weirdly attractive. He was nothing like the muscular, athletic, masculine guys your friends were all crushing on or dating, but there was just something about him.
You'd started talking (secretly, of course) about a month after you transferred, and started dating (again, secretly) just six months ago. It was a definitely stressful, but the adrenaline you got from it was addictive.
Right now, you're sitting on his bed listening to him yap about some band he's obsessed with while he puts on eyeliner using his phone camera as a mirror. This happens a ton, so you're pretty used to it by now.
"Anyway, I kinda think they stopped making emo music in 2013, maybe? Might've been earlier than that, but I'm not sure. Oh! And did you know that-" He rambled on, putting the phone and the eyeliner down on his nightstand.
