It had been a while since the war and James has yet to heal from the events that occured. His wife had died and had somehow protected their child to some extent. His friends had thrown accusations at each other, which caused them to drift farther away from each other even more. He had been betrayed by the same lad he used to call his "brother".

Safe to say, James' life was in shambles.

He didn't know what to think, how to act— should he start off with fixing his own life or should he multitask and help others as well? or maybe he should focus on being the father that he is, first? he had absolutely no clue and it drove him insane.

He didn't have any time to mourn for Lily"s death, no time to release his anger for Peter's betrayal, no time to think on how to try and fix Remus' and Sirius' drifting bond. It happened all at once and he had absolutely no one to ask for help, his parents had sadly passed away a few years before and he had also yet to properly visit their graves. He didn't even have time for himself, for goodness sake!

He acted on pure instinct and took care of Harry first, putting him as his top priority over everyone and everything. Despite knowing little to nothing about being a father, James tried his best to raise Harry as best as his parents raised him.

Cooking, cleaning, playing, putting him to bed, everything. James had to learn all of it the hard way and he didn't know how long he could last seeing as Sirius nor Remus had properly visited him and would try to leave the room at the sight of one another, not wanting any sort of contact due to how it usually escalates to an argument.

But thankfully, it seemed as if Merlin had heard his cries one sunny afternoon. When the little three year old Harry had ran off and James had found him, after a few moments of frantic calling and running around the park, with someone.
