You were still a very young child and Dostoevsky thought it would be a good idea for you to read. Initially he read you fairy tales, Russian and Japanese. But eventually he moved on to more adult books. You certainly weren't enthralled by such, especially when you were read a book where a blind man drowned his dog. As a child you couldn't understand the beauty of the work.
When you heard the title "Poor Lisa" you thought it was a fairy tale about a poor girl becoming rich with the help of a good fairy, but in the end you were read a book about a peasant girl drowning herself because of a failed love. With your childish brain you only picked up on the fact that Lisa went for a swim and for some reason didn't swim out.
"Thus ended her life, beautiful in body and soul. When I see you there, in the new life, I will recognize you, gentle Lisa...". Dostoevsky shifted his gaze to you and exhaled, realizing that you didn't understand a word. "Ratty, did you understand the meaning of the piece?"
