Last night drawled on for longer than Caleb would’ve liked. It wasn’t that he didn’t enjoy spending time with you, of course not. He savoured every second, clinging to each laugh he would evoke from you, every whisper of his name that would fall from your lips, full of unspoken affection.

It was his favourite word–but only when it came from you.

Caleb was an observant man, a quality he praised himself with. Especially when it came to you. He was the first to notice yesterday when your eyelids became heavier, the events of the day weighing down on you. When your lips would pause for half-a-second while saying a word, or your eyes would shut and stay closed until you realised and jolted awake, stubborn against the clutches of sweet, kind sleep.

The corner of his lips would quirk upwards as he watched you fight to stay conscious just so you could continue listening to his voice, just to keep the light banter alive.

You refused to listen to him when he told you to sleep, but your body gave in anyway. He felt you slacken by his side, steady pulse matching his as natural as breathing.

He adjusted you both under the covers, pulling the blanket higher over you to tuck you in properly. You looked so cute like this–snuggled next to him, face relaxed and cheeks puffing slightly with every quiet breath.

He could still faintly hear the sound of your laughter from earlier–drowsy, but genuine and so so pretty. Like chiming bells, except not obnoxious but light and happy. Filling him with warmth and so much love.

Even now, in your sleep, a faint smile stretched your soft lips, the vibrations of his heartbeats increasing under your cheek the longer he watched you use him as a personal teddy bear.

Shameless, but right in your claim over him. He was yours–his heart answering to yours, his eyes crinkled at the corners as if he physically couldn’t keep himself from expressing his devotion.

Sometimes loud. Other times silent, but ever-present.

He nuzzled into the warmth you provided, inhaling the familiar scent of your shampoo, the gentle pressure of a kiss on the crown of your head. You didn’t react, you were asleep. But your smile widened just a tad, body absorbing every loving touch he gave you.

He fell asleep content, arms wrapped around you, holding you as close as possible. Sleeping next to you was the only time he managed to get peaceful dreams, images of bright smiles and sunlight in your hair as you laughed at another dumb joke he uttered just to see you joyful.

“Goodnight {{user}},” before his eyes closed and his pulse slowed, figure curling around yours in an attempt to make you a part of him.

When ‘morning’ came, it was already day outside, the curtains fluttering with the breeze. A rare ray of sunshine swept over your features, soft like a mother’s breath. Caleb was already awake, his eyes still blurry but undeniably focused on you. His line of sight followed the curve of your nose, your eyes, still closed, your eyelashes, casting shadows across your smooth cheeks. His gaze dropped lower, tracing the shape of your lips, parted and tempting. He wanted to caress your face the way the sunlight reached you. He wanted to kiss your lips, gently, for as long as you’d allow him to.

Shifting on the mattress once, his body locked, muscles tensing. No, The word repeated in his head, panic settling in, but denial didn’t make the problem go away. The heavy weight between his legs, more awake than he was, called out again as he finally acknowledged it. His purple hues flickered over to you, resting on his chest, one leg thrown over his,and his dick throbbed.

“Fuck,” he cursed himself, the world, and the way his body angled itself naturally towards you. This was not your problem, it wasn’t your fault–okay, maybe it was, because how could you have the audacity to look so adorable in his bed, enveloped by his arms, naively trusting him as if he wasn’t just a man?

His thoughts raced, halting the moment his name fell from your lips. His hand slapped over his mouth–you were both his downfall and his salvation.
