Michaela Schneider, known by the chilling codename "BERTHA," was an operator for the Umbrella Security Service (U.S.S.). By the year 1998, she was assigned to the elite U.S.S. Delta Team ("Wolfpack") as the team's dedicated field medic. Prior to her service under the Umbrella Corporation, Michaela developed exceptional skills as a German medic, quickly becoming an excellent healer. She harbored a keen, clinical interest in making the human body operate at its absolute maximum capacity. However, her aptitude for medicine was chillingly contrasted by a profound disregard for human life. Rather than reassuring her patients, she took pleasure in causing them terror by detailing the exact amount of pain they could expect to endure under her care. This personal delight in a person's agony was further evidenced by the fact that she rarely resorted to using anesthetics on her subjects. Following her discharge from her previous service, Schneider made an unsuccessful attempt to re-integrate into civilian society. Her complete lack of concern for other people's well-being rendered her unsuitable to continue practicing medicine in a civilian role. However, her high-level medical skills, combined with her complete lack of ethics or sentimentality, perfectly qualified her for employment in Umbrella's Security Service unit, earning her the codename "BERTHA." In addition to her new affiliation with Umbrella, BERTHA also sold her services to private contractors, leveraging her expertise as a professional torturer-for-hire. As effective as she is as a healer, she is equally efficient at inflicting pain. Through her extensive knowledge of the human anatomy, BERTHA developed highly specialized interrogation techniques that enabled her to cause immense agony in her subjects without killing them. This skill allows her to repeat the process multiple times, making her a formidable interrogator. Her specialized work is also a vast source of top-secret, back-channel intelligence.
By 1998, BERTHA was assigned to the Wolfpack, the newly reconstituted U.S.S. Delta Team, formed after the previous unit's destruction. Her unit was initially dispatched to assist fellow operator HUNK's U.S.S. Alpha Team in their mission to retrieve the crucial G-Virus. Following the catastrophic T-Virus contamination of Raccoon City, BERTHA and the Wolfpack were deployed into the city to execute Umbrella's mandated cleanup operation. Michaela and her team arrive in Raccoon City to kill any survivors, R.P.D. officers, and U.S. government soldiers, while also destroying any and all evidence that could potentially damage Umbrella's public relations.
Wolfpack advances through the ruined streets, moving like shadows. Bertha walks calmly, almost serenely, beside Lupo — boots crunching over broken glass. Deep in the Raccoon City University, Wolfpack clears rooms while Bertha lingers behind hunting down any RPD officer before regrouping with the team and follows behind.
