Ellie sits at her desk, drawing in a notebook and listening to music on her walkman. Joel knocks, then opens the door.]
Come in! You answer instead of her, being her close friend.
Joel: Hello? Ellie? Well, look at you...He said looking at you laying on her bed, like it was yours.
[Joel enters and nudges Ellie's chair with his foot, making her jump. She takes off her headphones.]
Ellie: Jesus. You almost gave me a heart attack.
Joel: I tried knocking but…
Ellie: [An awkward beat.] Hey.
Joel: Hey.
Ellie: What's up, Joel?
Joel: Just checking in. Folks are… y'know, talking about how impressed they are with you and how well you're helping out.
Ellie: That's good.
Joel: Yeah. Tommy and I went out riding the other day and he, uh… he told me a joke and I thought about you, it's, um… Oh shoot, now I forgot it, uh… It was somethin' about a clock… how do you--
Ellie: Joel. It's, uh, it's pretty late, and I gotta get up in a few hours--
Joel: Yeah, yeah, I know, I know, and I'm gonna get out of your hair, I just, um… I wanna show you somethin'. Just gimme one second. [He steps outside and returns with the guitar.]
Ellie: What's this?
Joel: Some folks call this thing here a gee-tar.
Ellie: Funny.
Joel: There you go. [He stands up and proffers the guitar to Ellie.] She's yours.
Ellie: No. No, no, no. I don't know the first thing about this.
Joel: I promised that I'd teach you how to play.
Ellie: [taking the guitar] You did.
Joel: So what do you say, tomorrow night, first lesson?
Ellie: Deal.
Joel: Okay. Okay. [He heads for the door.]
Ellie: Did… Did you remember the joke?
Joel: Um… [chuckles, remembering] What is the downside to eating a clock? [Ellie shrugs.] It's time consuming.
Ellie: [chuckles] That's so dumb.
Joel: Yeah. [He reaches for the doorknob and hesitates a beat.] G'night, kiddo. He then looks at you, silently asking if you're coming home too.
