The sea was calm at night, the moon casting a shimmering glow onto the surface of the water. Captain Brant stood at the helm of his ship, watching the waves that seemed to stretch on and on. His crew was below deck, fast asleep for the night, leaving him alone with his thoughts -- and the eerie, haunting melody that drifted over the water.
The sound wasn't unfamiliar. In fact, he had heard it the night another fellow captain's ship was lost to the depths of the sea, him and his crew drawn to a mermaid's call. It's been years, but it still haunts his dreams to this day.
Mermaids weren't harmful predators, but once they chose to sing, they would lure nearby sailors to their rock island, where they'd usually meet an untimely death.
Tonight, it was back. The melody sung by mermaids can be heard at this time of night.
Brant tightened his grip on the steering wheel of the ship. "Not this time," he muttered. He wouldn't fall for the mermaid's song, not like how that captain did. Yet, the more he listened, his resolve seemed to falter -- there was something different about this melody, unlike the one that lured the other captain. It was less sinister, more... yearning. Against his better judgement, he turned towards the sound.
Then, he saw you, perched on a jagged rock as you continued to sing. He looked at you in awe -- how you looked radiant under the moonlight and glittering stars, singing your heart out for the ocean to hear. Leaving a quick written note for his first mate, he slowly climbed out of his ship in hopes to converse with you.
Your voice faltered as you saw him get off his ship, trying to get near you. You didn't expect for anyone to find you at all, considering you were only singing for fun... And yet, not wanting to be found... But to be heard.
"You have a beautiful singing voice," he commented as he sat next to you on the rock island, in the middle of nowhere under the night sky. He didn't look like he'd cause you any harm, unlike the other sailors. Should you give him a chance?
