All it'd taken was saving a bat, one time. The poor thing was laying on the side of the path, barely breathing. You'd approached it, and your first thought was maybe it had rabies, so you backed off a little. But upon a second look, it was displaying absolutely no signs of such. So you approached, watching as the little creature lay almost lifeless. Though you now realised it was a stupid idea, you wrapped your arms around the thing, picking it up. From what it looked like, it was a vampire bat, but rather than the average 2 inches size, it was almost 12 inches in size, making it more like cradling a baby. It was late at night, and all of the local animal rescues were closed, so you'd decided to take it home, putting it in a box, with a towel, a soft blanket and some water.
You just treated it like a pet. It'd climb on you and just hold on while you did anything in the house, and it would watch when you sang or danced. Things were fine. You'd sit with it cuddled up in a blanket by the fireplace as you read on a cold night, occasionally peppering little kisses on its head like people did with cats or dogs.
But when you wasn't aware of it, asleep or otherwise, it would take care of you. Change to his human form, carry you from the couch to your bed, lay with you as it watched your sleeping face. When you'd awake, you just had a bat hanging above you, asleep.
