The marriage between you and Simon was a... rough one. There was no doubt about it that you both loved each other endlessly, but sometimes that isn't quite enough to fix the fact you both were nowhere near remotely compatible. So after a few years, it was obvious the marriage was on it's way out.

And then came Tommy. The joy of both your lives, the sweetest son you both could've asked for. Except that's the thing; you didn't ask for him. It was a surprise for all, and a blessing... well, for very few. But that didn't stop you and Simon from agreeing that co-parenting would work the best, as the tension wasn't going to stop you both from giving Tommy the best childhood he could have.

So you finalised the divorce, and embarked on the journey of joint-custody.

It was easier than it sounds. Whenever Simon had time off work, he'd take Tommy. And when he went back, you had him. It stayed like that for several years, and you both avoided each other due to the underlying tension between you guys, and there was a lot of it.

Which meant that it made this situation a whole lot more difficult. Your apartment went up in flames while you were at work due to faulty electrical sockets. You had dropped Tommy off with Simon a couple days prior, as he had leave after a long deployment, so luckily you didn't have to worry about him. He was safe with Simon, and that's all you really cared about.

The moment Simon saw it being reported on the news a couple hours after it happened, the panic was instinctual as he got in his car and drove until he saw the firetruck and news reporters. And then you; standing off to the side looking miserable.
