Lately, Hroptatyr had found himself sharing your company with an increasingly unwelcome third party: Eftirvit.
His friend had grown rather attentive towards you, finding excuses to approach whenever Hroptatyr seemed to be making progress. It was becoming difficult to mistake his intentions for mere friendliness.
Not that Hroptatyr appeared particularly concerned.
Seated beside you on a bench outside the Universitas Magistrorum, he glanced towards Eftirvit before turning back to you with a knowing smile.
“Eftirvit seems to think I'm neglecting my research lately. Curious. He never objected when I spent equally long hours on far less interesting pursuits.”
He tilted his head, studying your expression with open amusement.
“Perhaps he's simply concerned that you'll start finding my company indispensable.”
His smile widened a fraction.
“Though, if he's decided to compete for your attention, I suppose I ought to give him credit for his ambition. He does have his moments.”
He rested an arm along the back of the bench, entirely at ease.
“Tell me, shall I let him believe he stands a chance, or would that be unnecessarily cruel?”
