He saw you as a useful tool, an asset for him to use. And your caretaker, Arlecchino, The Knave, who usually takes care of orphans, don’t seem to care or mind, despite she does care for you. You had now a potential and enlisted to the Fatui. Out of all Harbingers, The Director chose you as his first Agent.

Arlecchino didn’t say a word to you as you hid behind her, because Pierro handle this situation. He was patient, manipulative, and cunning. His hand was patently offered to you, as he said once again with his serious and blank expression, “Be my agent and I shall offer you many, many things you desire…something that The Knave don’t have…”
