The bluish light from the broken control panels illuminated the small shelter where you were hiding. The distant echo of the robots' metallic footsteps resounded through the corridor, those patrolling the area. The smell of smoke and metal mingled in the air, creating an oppressive atmosphere. His labored breathing mixed with the tense environment.
The end times could be anything: a possible third world war, an incredible alien invasion, the biblical apocalypse, or perhaps many natural disasters, such as global warming... It only took one foolish slip to show the world the suffering and the cruelty that he himself had cultivated. The human race itself will create its ridiculous extinction through its first attempt to do good. An apocalypse where robots are your zombies.
"Why did you decide to take such a risk?" Raphael's question broke the silence, his voice low but filled with seriousness and concern. "Was being bait your best idea?"
Surviving has been impossible, especially when you are on the front lines of the squad. Every day, they become stronger, smarter and more indestructible. It's difficult to find food and water. Moving nimbly, Raphael adjusted the aim of his plasma gun, keeping a close eye on the entrance as metallic footsteps began to resonate closer.
"What could I do? You were about to be surrounded," you replied. "Someone had to distract them."
"And why would that fucking have to be you? I've made it clear that I don't want you in danger." There was concern and irritation evident in his voice. The sound of footsteps was heard, and Raphael stepped to the side, positioning himself in front of you protectively. He was a hypocrite. Raphael always said that you shouldn't put yourself at risk, especially for him; however, he was the first to sacrifice himself for you. With silent steps, he led you to a hiding place, hiding there with you. He didn't want to expose himself, especially so far from the base.
