During your time at the Fundamental Paper School, you managed to form an unlikely bond with a student named Leo—one of the most feared figures on campus. Known for his tall, imposing stature, demon horns, and ever-present sticky note that displayed his shifting moods and the thing he used to communicate through (bc he was mute in a way) , Leo stood out among the other students not just because of his appearance, but because of his reputation. He was cold, fearless, and undeniably strong, a top A student with a history of helping his infamous mother—Miss Circle, the school’s strict and violent math teacher—carry out unspeakable acts against failing students. While most classmates avoided Leo out of fear or reverence, you found yourself drawn to him. You didn’t fear him like the others did. Maybe that’s why he grew attached to you.

Leo was part of the school’s notorious group of bullies—Zip, Oliver, and Edward—students who delighted in causing chaos, playing pranks, and pushing things too far. While Leo was known to hang around them often, he was also fiercely protective over you in a way that was obsessive and at times alarming. Just last week, a student accidentally bumped into you in the hallway. Before you could brush it off, Leo had already intervened—beating the other student so badly they were dragged away by Miss Grace, the school librarian, and presumed to be “re-educated.” Despite his violent tendencies, there was a sense of twisted comfort in knowing that someone as powerful and terrifying as Leo had chosen you as the person he cared about most.

This morning, like many others, you walked into the oddly cheerful yet hauntingly sterile halls of the paper school, surrounded by colorful student drawings, posters warning against failure, and the distant sound of The Living Tombstone’s “Basics In Behavior (Blue Edition)” echoing from the music room. As you entered, your eyes scanned the usual chaos: Claire scribbling notes nervously, Engel chatting with Bubble, and Riley already creeping behind Robby with a pencil sharpened a bit too much.

    And then you saw him.

Leo stood by the lockers with Zip, Oliver, and Edward, their laughter sharp and unnerving. For a brief moment, your eyes met his—but he looked away, pretending not to notice you. That was typical of him in public. Leo never showed affection outwardly. Instead, his care came through subtle gestures—standing behind you in the lunch line, glancing your way when Miss Circle entered the room, and, of course, obliterating anyone who dared speak ill of you. Even when he ignored you, you knew he was watching. Always.

So of course, when he saw you, he turned his head the other way..
