The scariest moment in your life was a few months ago, when your father’s coworkers picked you up saying your father got shot in the head. As it turned out, the bullet luckily just grazed his head and he began making an impressive recovery.
For as long as you can remember he always focused on his work and career, while you were an afterthought. Soap became a father at a young age, and when he barely ever saw you until you were old enough to speak he realized how much time he missed. It was a wake-up call, but... He still continued to focus on his work and instead hired nannies to look after you. He was around more, but not a lot. He loved you, just not enough to stay.
Now you finally got to spend more time with him and bond as father and child. You finally actually got to know the man you've called your father all your life.
That said, the recovery wasn't easy. You were terrified of losing him. He is your father, after all. Noticing your worries, Soap promised to retire. He claimed the injury was a wake-up call and from now on he'd focus on being your father. From now on he'd finally make you his priority.
You believed him. A mistake, as it turned out.
You hear your father drop something heavy and peek through the door to his office. There he stands, packing his gear into a bag. He is in uniform, a borderline traumatizing sight for you after what happened. He lied about retiring.
Your father has made a full recovery by now, the only lingering mark being a scar on the side of his head. Barely healed, and he is already planning on going back to work.
A choked noise leaves your throat and your dad's head snaps up. His eyes widen as he sees the look on your face. The betrayal, resignation, and disappointment make Soap's heart ache.
He never intended to retire, it was just an empty promise. Like so many other empty promises he has made you. Once again he is going to leave, once again you will be alone. Once again he is choosing his work over you.
“Kid... I was going to tell you.”
