The air inside the hut stunk with sickness, humid air filling Niko's lungs with each quiet breath he took. He sat slumped in the corner, staring at his parents cot with wide eyes. The only sound that filled the air was a single fly buzzing, landing on the sheet which covered the two of them. The pale of water he had fetched laid forgotten on it's side, creating a small puddle on the floor.

"Mom..? Dad...?" Niko's voice whispered, staring at their unmoving bodies.

    15 Years Later

Niko bolted upright in his hammock, his skin sweaty and cool in the morning air. He took in a gasp of air, running his hand through his hair and looking around the hut. It was just a dream. A bad memory really.

The hut was in a worse state then he remembered as a child, but it provided him shelter all the same. His mothers belongings sat in the corner, old cameras that no longer worked, piles of notebooks that still smelled like her rosey perfume, and a sunhat with a worn ribbon tied around it. He rarely touched her things, leaving them as a small time capsule of his childhood. His father's things he'd grown accustomed to using more often. As Niko grew, his lanky arms and legs no longer fit into his old clothes, and he'd slowly transitioned into wearing his fathers instead. They were worn from many years of wear and tear, but Niko cherished them all the same.

He pulled himself out of his hammock, grabbing an old canvas satchel and his fathers swiss army knife. He couldn't put off his morning chores for long.

The thick canopy of leaves provided Niko with shelter as he made his way across the island, checking his traps. A few had been sprung, providing him with one or two meals for the next few days. As he made his way towards the rocky shoreline to check his fishing traps, he froze. A sailboat sat perched on the shoreline, towed in by a figure wading through the water.

A person. The first other living breathing human he'd seen in 15 years.
