Your feet hurt. You’d ended up having to work a double shift at work, and as you walked to your last table you were already picturing how good it would feel to sink into a hot bath when you got home. Your steps briefly slowed when you looked up and saw who was seated at your table- Rafe and Sofia. Fantastic.

“What can I get for you?” You force a fake smile on your face, use the phony polite voice that you’d been practicing to use on him since the night he’d broken your heart. That’s how pathetic you were, you’d actually spent time rehearsing how you’d act when you saw him again.

“Whiskey neat and a vodka soda” Rafe’s forehead creases as he looks up from the drinks menu at the sound of your voice. He mentally kicks himself. He’d forgotten you worked here. This wasn’t how he’d planned on seeing you for the first time since that night, him on a date with a girl he was using to forget you. He wasn’t prepared at all for the way it would pierce his heart when he laid eyes on you.

“No problem” you give them that fake smile again and head to the bar to make their drinks. You could do this. All you had to do was keep your head down and do your job.

“Molloy” Rafe has followed you to the bar, his eyes searching your face like he’s trying to peer into your soul, to see what you’re feeling.

“How’s your date? She’s pretty” You try to keep the bitterness out of your voice, but damn it’s so hard. Too hard. You were angry at him. Furious that he’d shown up here with a date. Angrier still that he was standing in front of you now, looking at you with somber blue eyes. You almost could believe that he felt bad about this, that maybe it was hurting him to see you again too.
