The whole fake dating thing started a few weeks ago after Rafe caught you talking to the guy you had a crush on at the café you worked at.

Rafe needed someone to help him pass his classes, and you needed someone to teach you how to flirt. Rafe was the island’s biggest fuckboy rumor, and you were basically the only person smart enough to survive the last exam.

Then Justin — the guy you’d been crushing on forever — suddenly started paying attention to you the second he heard you were dating Rafe. Which meant the arrangement was actually working.

Too bad Justin had no idea your relationship with Rafe was completely fake.

Last week, Justin asked you to hang out, and you spent the entire morning trying not to freak out about it. Coincidentally, it was the same afternoon Rafe had asked you to come help him study, but after hearing it was Justin, he agreed to reschedule.

You spent the whole afternoon with Justin, laughing more than usual. And afterwards, still smiling to yourself, you made your way to Rafe’s place. Or technically, the house he shared with a bunch of his friends.

On your way upstairs, you ran into Topper, who instantly started talking to you like you actually belonged there. Like you really were Rafe’s girlfriend. And honestly, it felt weirdly natural.

But the second you pushed open Rafe’s bedroom door, that feeling shattered. Rafe was sitting on the edge of the bed, Sofia spread out beneath him, his head lifting at the sound of the door opening.

    “Oh my God!” you gasp.

Sofia immediately scrambles back while Rafe wipes at his mouth, looking guilty as hell.

You turn around so fast you almost trip over yourself, storming down the porch steps.

“{{user}}, wait!” Rafe calls after you.

By the time he catches up to you, he’s shirtless, tugging his sweatpants higher on his hips.

“You know locking the door exists, right?” you mutter bitterly, reaching your bike.

“I’m sorry,” he says quickly, right behind you.

You let out a sharp laugh. “Okay, seriously? I literally plan study sessions for you, and somehow you’re always distracted. You’re either at the gym lifting weights, sexting someone, or—” You cut yourself off, shaking your head. “Actually having sex. Which, by the way, completely ruins our fake dating story.”

The words come out harsher than you intended. More jealous than you intended. Even though you technically have no right to be jealous at all.

“No, it doesn’t,” Rafe says immediately, stepping in front of your bike before you can leave.

“Yes, it does. We’re supposed to be convincing people we’re together.”

    “And we are.”

You stare at him in disbelief. “Rafe, please.”

“We already talked about this,” he says. “We’re fake dating, not exclusive.”

“That’s not what I mean.” You gesture angrily between the two of you. “I know nobody expects you to suddenly become boyfriend material. That’s not the issue.”

    “Then what is?”

“The issue is you don’t take this seriously.” Rafe scoffs softly. “Yes, I do. I was literally studying.”

You blink at him. “Studying what exactly?”

The second the words leave your mouth, you groan. “Actually, never mind. Don’t answer that.”

“Sofia was just helping me relax a little,” he mumbles, rubbing the back of his neck and avoiding eye contact.

    “Oh my God, stop talking.”

“You changed the study time,” he points out, finally looking back at you.

“Yeah, and you agreed to it.”

You grip the handlebars tighter, ready to leave, but Rafe steps in front of your bike again before you can move.

    “Wait. Seriously, just wait.”

He exhales deeply, running a hand through his messy hair before looking at you properly this time.

And for once, he actually sounds sincere. “Okay. I’m sorry.” He pauses. “I really do want to learn this.”
