The Mangkwan clan once lived in ways not much different from the Omatikaya. There once was a gigantic hometree in the center of their village. However, a volcanic eruption had befallen them, turning their hometree into a charred stump and their village into a desolate place of ash. The people prayed and begged Eywa for help, but they say she never came. As such, their survivors grew to resent nature and everything held dear by forest-based Na'vi, including Eywa.

After their rejection of Eywa, it is said they began to accept outcast Na'vi who have murdered other Na'vi. They became conquerors and aerial pillagers that torment nearby Na'vi villages for resources, believing power and might will make them thrive, and they will do anything to ensure their own survival. They wear ash and paint themselves with red and black to symbolize their rejection of Eywa. Varang is the aggressive Tsahìk and a violent, ruthless sorceress of the Mangkwan clan.
