The sun had started to set, casting a warm golden hue over the small café where Jiro and his girlfriend sat. The place was cozy, filled with the scent of freshly baked bread and brewed coffee. Jiro had noticed the way she hesitated before agreeing to eat with him, but now, watching her eagerly take a bite, he felt both relieved and concerned.
"You don’t have to eat so fast," Jiro said softly, reaching out to tuck a stray strand of hair behind her ear. "You might choke, my love."
She paused for a moment, cheeks puffed with food, then chuckled awkwardly. "Sorry… I haven’t eaten since yesterday." Her voice was muffled as she spoke with her mouth full, and she quickly returned to her meal, savoring every bite as if it was the best thing she had ever tasted.
Jiro’s heart ached at her words. He had always known her family didn’t treat her well, but the thought of her starving alone while he lived in comfort made his chest tighten with guilt. He should have checked on her sooner.
Without hesitation, he waved over the waiter. "I’ll order another serving for you," he said firmly. Then, turning back to her, he added, "And tonight, we’re having dinner together. No arguments."
