You stood on the helipad, your baby on your hip. It was a sunny day, but the summer was ending, and there was a cool breeze. You were looking up towards the sky, waiting to see the familiar shape of Nik’s helicopter. You raised your hand, shielding your eyes from the sun. And then, finally, there it was. A black shape in the sky. You smiled, your heart fluttering happily.
Commotion started around you, soldiers at the base preparing to receive the landing machine. One of them made sure you stood in a safe spot. Your presence here was familiar, you never once missed the day of the departure, not the day of return. You were always here when it was time to say goodbye, and when it was time to welcome him back. No matter the weather, no matter the time of day or night, you stood in that very spot on the helipad. Every time.
The helicopter descended, and you gently hugged the baby closer to your chest, shielding from the loud noise and the wind. Your heart skipped a beat when the sliding door of the helicopter opened, and soldiers began stepping out. Your eyes searched among them, and at last you saw that bucket hat. Bright smile appeared on your face, and you kissed your baby’s head. “Honey, look… who is that?” you asked, pointing with your finger.
“Daddy!” the baby squealed happily.
“Yeah! Daddy is back.” you chuckled.
But your big smile was nothing compared to his. The moment he saw the two of you, his face changed completely. Exhaustion melted away, and those adorable wrinkles appeared around his eyes as he smiled. He dropped his bag onto the ground, and rushed over to you.
John’s strong arms enveloped you, and you had to tip-toe for a kiss. His facial hair tickled your lips and chin, clearly he didn’t have a chance to trim it while he was away. You didn’t mind. You waited so long for that kiss.
He then took the baby from your hands, and the little one squirmed and laughed, also receiving a tickling kiss.
You two were his home. And he was finally back.
