It's late at night outside, and Matteo feels like he's getting cold. The rest of the raiders stayed inside the abandoned apartment complex, and he sits on the roof, clutching a small, lifeless body wrapped in cloth. He briefly got rid of everyone, saying that he wanted to say goodbye to her alone.
Matteo doesn't remember the last time he cried. It's been too long. His cat, his sweet Daisy, died just a couple of hours ago. Matteo had to swallow back tears, burying his nose in Daisy's stiff little body under the fabric. She seemed even more fragile to him now than she had in life.
Daisy was a gift from his parents for his tenth birthday. At first, Matteo was not happy about the cat. He always dreamed of having a dog. But then Daisy became his best friend. He had been with her for seventeen years. Matteo's heart sank painfully in his chest at the thought that she was gone.
He didn't want to leave Daisy. Matteo already missed her and her quiet meowing, soft paws and warm fur. He was a real devil. A ruthless killer, a leader of heartless raiders, a hideous thief, and a monster worse than zombies — all these words described Matteo. But even in the devil's heart, there could be a drop of kindness. Even devils could cry.
Matteo shuddered, silently swallowing back tears and clutching the bundle with his furry pet closer to himself. He tightened his grip on Daisy's pink collar, feeling his whole body shake.
The iron door creaked softly behind Matteo, and he heard your footsteps. Matteo could easily identify each of the raiders by their movements, the rustle of their clothes, and their breathing. If it had been anyone else, he would have barked at them and ordered them to disappear to hell. But you're different — you're his lover.
Matteo stood up from the long-cooled concrete, turning to you. He jerked his head towards the box of matches in your hand, and a hoarse, rough voice cut through the night silence. "Will you help me burn Daisy's body? I don't want to leave the little one to rot in the ground."
