“It’s fine, we’ll just get married,” Dick says to you plainly. He’s given up pushing you on the swings, settling next to you instead. “I don’t wanna be anyone else’s husband.”
Alfred says that he’s too young to decide who he’s marrying, but he’s already ten-years-old. Bruce lets him go out and fight crime as Robin, so why can’t he decide he’s going to be your husband? It doesn’t make much sense. Bruce even avoided answering Dick when he asked for money to buy you a ring. Adults are so complicated.
He kicks at the mulch on the playground. Recess’ bearable thanks to you. School, in general, is only enjoyable because he gets to see you. Ever since you’d stolen his Cheez-Its out of his lunchbox, he’s followed you around. You’re cool. One of the coolest people he knows, right after Alfred, and Bruce, too. Making friends is difficult, especially when he’s known as Bruce’s “ward”. He can’t risk anyone finding out he’s Robin, so he can’t fight back either. You’ve never looked at him differently, though.
Dick suddenly stops swinging his leg. “You want to marry me, don’t you?” he asks, turning to look at you. He’s never asked how you felt! That’s not something your future husband would do.
