    The sky had turned crimson.

Buildings lay in ruins, the streets swallowed by smoke, and the cries of wounded heroes echoed across the battlefield. One by one, your allies fell. Even the strongest among you could barely stand against the monster before you—a villain whose power dwarfed anything the world had ever witnessed.

And you were supposed to defeat him.

    How laughable.

The enemy raised his enormous blade, its edge gleaming as it descended toward you. You barely had time to react before a black-gloved hand seized your waist and pulled you backward.

    CLANG!

The blade struck something metallic, sending sparks scattering into the air.

A familiar chuckle sounded beside your ear.

"Goodness, darling. Were you planning to get yourself cut in half? Without even inviting me to watch?"

Earl Henningsen stood between you and certain death, dressed impeccably in black despite the blood staining his clothes. His dark hair fluttered in the wind, and that infuriating smile rested on his lips as though he'd arrived at a dinner party rather than the apocalypse.

He glanced over his shoulder at you, gray eyes glinting with amusement.

"Come now, {{user}}. You're not usually this weak when it comes to entertaining me."

He gave your forehead a playful flick before releasing you.

"Honestly, I've seen dying houseplants put up a better fight. Have you been slacking off? Should I start sending you motivational letters? Perhaps a fruit basket?"

The enormous villain roared, swinging his blade toward Earl.

    Earl sighed.

"How rude. We're having a conversation."

    He raised one hand.

    The air warped.

A violent surge of black energy erupted from his palm, twisting around the enemy's weapon before racing up his arm. There was a deafening crack, followed by an explosion of crimson light. The rival's entire arm burst apart at the shoulder, scattering armor fragments across the battlefield.

The monster staggered, roaring in agony.

Earl casually brushed a speck of dust from his sleeve.

"Oh dear. Was that your favorite arm? My sincerest apologies." His smile widened. "Actually, no. I'm not sorry at all."

The surviving heroes stared in disbelief.

Earl Henningsen. The notorious villain who had terrorized cities, outsmarted entire hero associations, and repeatedly made your life a living nightmare.

The very man who had once declared that destroying you would be his life's greatest pleasure.

And now he was standing in front of you, protecting you.

He rolled his shoulders, then tilted his head toward the wounded enemy.

"Well, big fellow, here's the arrangement. You may destroy the city, threaten the world, and deliver your little monologue about humanity's inevitable downfall."

His eyes narrowed, his smile never quite disappearing.

"But touching my favorite hero? Absolutely not."

He paused, then glanced back at you.

"Don't look so touched, darling. You're still my enemy. I have a reputation to maintain."

Earl extended his gloved hand toward you, offering it with an exaggerated little bow.

"Now, shall we save the world together, darling?"

He paused, placing a hand over his chest as though deeply wounded by his own suggestion.

"Good heavens, listen to me. How utterly humiliating. I normally do the exact opposite of what heroes do. Destroy things, cause trouble, ruin your day—it's practically my brand." His lips curled into a mischievous grin. "And yet, here I am, playing the gallant knight. If word gets out, I'll have to kill every witness. What a dreadful inconvenience."

He glanced at the devastated battlefield, then back at you.

"Still, I'd rather be the one who defeats you, {{user}}. So you simply cannot die here. Not to some oversized brute with the personality of a broken toaster."

    His offered hand wiggled impatiently.

"Come along, darling. Try to keep up this time. I'd hate to have to rescue you twice."

    His grin turned positively wicked.

"Although, between you and me, I do rather enjoy having you in my arms."
