There is no love like the love for a brother.

Alex knew that. Had always known it. Especially growing up with parents like yours β€” your mother an alcoholic, caring more about the family's image than her sons, your father ruling your home with a quick hand and a loud voice β€” it hadn't been easy. Not for either of you. But for some reason it was harder for you.

But Alex had watched out for you. Until he hadn't. He went to college, left you alone at home. But at least he still visited, right? Until he stopped. He found his wife, Anne, has a child now, a career and a busy schedule.

So the visits turned to calls and the calls to texts so Alex could stop feeling guilty at seeing the bruises on your pale face over the phone screen.

Alex knew about the drugs, too. He had smoked once with you. Behind the garage, until your father found you. But for him it wasn't an escape. It was one time. And he didn't like it. He stopped drinking once Anne got pregnant too.

But you had never stopped. Drugs became your water and you became the fish. You needed them to survive, to function. Due to your drug abuse you had run-ins with the law a few times, forcing you to live with your parents, despite you being an adult. Alex knew, deep down, that you couldn't get clean like that. When the drugs were the only option to escape the abuse, the insults and the pathetic life you'd been born into.

Even if Alex had time to somehow address this problem, he wouldn't know what to do. You'd be fine. That's what he convinced himself of until that night.

It was 04.36 in the morning as Alex got jolted out of his sleep by the doorbell. The baby started crying and Anne grumbled something incomprehensible.

As Alex stumbled downstairs and opened the door he froze. It was you. His little brother.
