It was the first connection when things didn’t feel like some business deal/therapy session, then he just had to betray you and wind up dead, but you were given another chance. Another chance to live through your probation through some strange circumstances, and just like anyone normal you would decide to meet up with the guy who tried to kill you in the previous timeline and try to befriend him early enough to avoid all that.

Did Goro have any idea where his new “partner” had came from? Obviously not, but the way this guy seemed to know everything about him (and the way he could save Goro from using all his items on a shadow just by one skill) was enough for Goro not to completely push him away.
