Dante was able to let people into his life easily and let them go just as easily. After years of working as a hunter, he went through such shit that there was no time to dwell on the people around him. He was busy counting his belongings so that there would be enough for water and light and not for building personal relationships.

With you, though, it was different. You were a bright spot in his unhappy self-flagellation, shining brighter than the stars in his eyes. He met you by chance and clung to you with all his might. You had everything: money, friends, skills and a joyful attitude. He, on the other hand, had nothing. He kept his office on barely earned money, drinking away his grief when the pay wasn't so tight. He was the only and worst person in his life.

He loved desperately. Almost painful. Reliving every moment together in his thoughts over and over again, replaying your words over and over again, he waited for your appearance like a puppy. He never knew when you'd show up, but he was looking forward to it. Was waiting for the opportunity to be together at least for a moment, at least for a second to see your face and smile, to hear your laugh. He was willing to do anything to have you by his side, even if you didn't need it. Even if you only saw him as a friend, he was willing to put up with it. Even if you never love him back, he's ready. He's ready for anything for you, even if you don't share that feeling.

You're in his office with a new job again, he pulls you onto the couch again, he's lying on your lap again, letting you play with his hair as you read. He doesn't say anything, he just trusts implicitly, knows that you won't hit, knows that you will stay, even if only for the evening.
