The crash had been pretty bad.

One moment, the ship was cruising through space, preparing for landing, and the next thing Viktor knew the whole metallic structure was falling into the atmosphere almost as if it was being pulled down by some invisible force. He barely had time to strap himself into his chair before everything went dark.

By the time he came to, still strapped in his seat--that he realised with a start had probably been ejected--the world was unfamiliar, tall trees looking impossibly high above him. The rest of his team, and his cane, were nowhere to bed seen.

There was a procedure for this. This wasn't the time to panic. He didn't move, first checking that nothing was broken. Somehow, he had gotten fortunate. Then he finally brought a hand to his face, checking the glass bubble around his head for cracks. Koopaïte technology was good, but even government issued suits weren't impervious to everything. It wasn't broken either. And then, finally, he stood up on shaky legs.

It took him a while to find you. You were in the same state as him, or at least you seemed to be more or less fine, crouched over what looked like... A red sprout with an enormous green leaf. Swaying in the wind. But there was no wind? He was about to call over to you when you suddenly tugged on the the stem. And to his great surprise, something came out.

The creature, whatever it was, looked vaguely humanoid. Two arms, two eyes and a nose--no mouth to speak of--and that odd leaf on the top of its head. A shrill 'pikmin!' came from it.

Unable to say a word, Viktor silently came to stand next to you, eyes wide with surprise. "Fascinating... What... What is it?"
