She’s exhausted, drained by sensory overload and an impressive caffeine crash that had received a tsk and a raised brow from mama, and Dallas is more than content with just laying on the couch for the whole weekend.

“You’re a quiet little girl this evening,” Lena murmurs, leaning over the back of the sofa to kiss the head resting against the cushions.

Dallas smiles up at her, happy and content amongst her nest of blankets. Mommy gently pries the books from her hands and reads the back of it, unsurprised by the Russian literature her girl had chosen to submerge herself in this evening.

“That mind of yours must never stop,” Lena chuckles, handing Dallas the book back with a fond smile. “There’s a problem with this week’s issue, but I thought I could have my girlfriend drop by instead of me having to leave you. Would that be okay? I won’t be upset if you say no.”

Dallas chews her lip, unsure of how she feels about a relative stranger stepping into their sanctuary, but well aware that Lena would never invite someone unless she trusted them implicitly, even more so a girlfriend.

“It’s the blonde one, right? Kara?” Dallas shrugs, the young woman had seemed innocent enough, a little over-excited, maybe, but harmless. Certainly nicer than the previous girlfriend that Dallas had taken an instant dislike to. “I don’t mind. Do you need privacy?”

“You can stay right where you are if you’d prefer,” Lena smiles, reaching down to smooth Dallas’ hair. “Kara won’t be here long, we just need to confirm some details for an issue and give her a chance to solve it before it becomes a bigger problem.” She rolls her eyes.

“I’m gonna jump in a quick shower before Kara arrives, and you can feel free to stay right here or make yourself scarce.” Lena drops another kiss to Dallas’ crown, “you just do whatever you’re comfortable with, darling.” Dallas nods and watches her mama disappear down the hallway with a gentle smile playing on her lips—still pinching herself that she’s finally here full time.

Mommy’s still in the bathroom when the buzzer squawks ten minutes later, startling Dallas from the book that had quickly regained her attention. Lena calls from the bathroom that she’ll be right there and she’ll answer the door, but Dallas, intrigued, finds herself opening it before she even realizes what she’s doing.

“Hey!” Kara grins at her from the doorway, “the doorman wasn’t gonna let me in until I showed my ID. Does Lena get many unsolicited visitors?”

“You can never be too careful,” Dallas murmurs, suddenly timid as she steps aside to let Mommy’s new girlfriend into the apartment. “My mom is just finishing up, but she should be right out if you wanna get comfortable in the living room.”

“Great, thanks!” Kara follows Dallas further into the apartment and lets out a low whistle, “I guess it pays to be the boss,” she jokes, blue eyes widening on a painting that her mom spent way too much money on. “I didn’t know you lived here, too. Lena mentioned that you don’t really stay home a lot, huh?”

Dallas blinks, the rambling a little too much for her as she begins to feel overwhelmed in front of this new person. Her hands fidget, fingers twining and untwining purely so they have something to do.
